The Secret World Game Review

The Secret World is an online MMORPG that has a unique setting. This unique setting is actually the real world as we see it today believe it or not. There aren’t many MMORPG video games set in the real world, so this makes the game feel more believable and relatable.

It’s worth mentioning The Secret World is not a free to play video game as you have to purchase it before you are able to play it. It’s not too expensive as you can buy it for $29.99 over on Steam. There are other extras you can pay for if you want, but there is no monthly fee which is a good thing. Basically you just pay for the game once, and that’s all you need to pay for.

That being said, The Secret World is a pretty large game and you will need a decent PC in order to play it. I had to play this game at a friend’s house as his laptop is far more powerful than mine. You will need at least 30GB of free hard drive space and 2GB or more of RAM to play it. The recommended specs are a little higher if you want to experience the game at its graphical best.

The first thing you will have to do in The Secret World is choose which faction you want to be with. There is the “Illuminati”, “Templars” and “Dragon” factions available. You won’t be able to align yourself with a different faction after you make your choice, so make sure to choose properly the first time around. Each faction even has a propaganda video to help you make your choice.

After you finally choose a faction, you are then prompted to create the main character you’d like to play as. You can play as either a female or male character and there is a wealth of different options available to make them look the way you want them to. You can change their skin color, nose, hairstyle, give them facial hair and more. There are also options for you to change the clothes that they wear too. Since this game is set in the real-world, all of the clothes are normal so you won’t see any outrageous looking armor or anything like that. It’s also worth mentioning you can obviously only play as a human being too.

The one thing I like about The Secret World is its very high production values. The game has an actual story and starts off with many cutscenes. The game starts off pretty slow at the start, but I do admire all of the voice acting and cutscenes that play out. It makes you feel more invested in the game’s story, as you are not just doing random quests like in other MMORPG video games.

The Secret World itself is a very large game and has many areas for you to explore. The first place I managed to visit was Seoul, South Korea. It was pretty cool as you can roam around the city streets and enter buildings and stuff. During the first part of the game, there weren’t many NPCs roaming around, but you can get to talk to some of them when you enter building and accept quests from them.

The combat in The Secret World is pretty slick and awesome too. It plays like a third-person shooter as you can aim and fire at you own will. The combat gameplay feels smooth and not as rigid as in other MMORPGs. It feels refreshing after the hack and slash style of games that plague the MMORPG genre.

Another thing to admire about The Secret World is how large the game really is. The graphics may look outdated to some (the game came out in 2012), but the areas you will explore are expansive. Korea was the first country I visited, but there are other countries in the game such as England and Egypt just to name a few. You can literally spend hours just walking around and exploring the whole areas in this game.

There is a PvP system available in The Secret World, but it’s not as enjoyable as playing against the AI. Combat here doesn’t feel as satisfying as it feel rough and hard playing against real-life players. It’s better to just play this game’s single player offering as it is way more fun and not so clunky.

The Secret World is an excellent game that offers hours of gameplay and is one of the more unique MMORPGs ever. The real-life locations look great and offer an experience few other MMORPG video games can. You have to pay to play the game, but at least there is no monthly fee attached to it. If you have $29.99 to spare, this might be worth buying if you are a fan of the MMORPG genre.
