The game starts off immediately was you are already going through the tutorial. There is sadly no backstory to the game nor can you choose a type of faction you’d like to play as like in other RTS video games. All that happens is that you are already building a city and empire and the game kicks you off like that. It’s a little disappointing that there’s no reason given as to why you are building an empire, but this is just a minor gripe in what is somewhat an entertaining game at times.

What I liked about Kings of the Realm is that it’s not as slow-paced and boring like other games from the same genre. RTS games can usually be boring if it takes ages for you to build your city and empire. This is because you don’t have to wait too long to construct buildings or assemble an army. You can speed up your production literally for free instead of paying like you do in other so called “free to play” video games.

In terms of combat, sadly Kings of the Realm is just a simulation and no combat actually takes place. You can assign soldiers to build you army and let them attack nearby cities and other factions at any time. You can choose to attack A.I. controlled cities or even cities governed other players. You only get a report card on what happens as you don’t see what actually happens when an attack is made. You do however get to see who survives during an attack. If one of your commanders is dead, you can choose to revive him and recruit more soldiers to replace the ones that died.

Apart from making your empire as big as it can be, you always have to make sure it is safe too. Other than building an army, you can build defenses and walls around your empire to help keep out unwanted enemies from invading it. Building your empire and making sure it’s safe is not as time consuming as it can be like in other RTS video games. I applaud that Kings of the Realm quickens the pace a bit because it can be boring just waiting for buildings to be constructed all the time like in other games.

In terms of its visuals, Kings of the Realm is very impressive. Everything is rendered in full 3D and it’s one of the most realistic looking free to play video games I have ever played. The graphics are highly detailed and you can even zoom in to see more of what is happening. It’s too bad the combat in this game is simulated because it would have been cool to see battles actually being played out with this game’s decent graphics. Bear in mind, the game does load slowly and you may need a decent computer in order to run this game properly without experiencing any faults or crashes. The audio in this game is not bad either with a decent soundtrack always playing in the background while you play.

All in all, Kings of the Realm doesn’t offer anything new to the RTS genre, but it’s still a fun game to play nonetheless. I admire how the game allows you to construct buildings in a fast pace and you’re not just waiting around all the time. The graphics are also one of the best I have seen in a free to play RTS game before. If you are a fan of the RTS genre in general, Kings of the Realm is worth looking at. If you want something more action packed, you’re better off finding something else to play.
