The game starts off with an interesting backstory about a wannabe warrior venturing out on his own only armed with a “sharp sword” and his “energy”. He’s on a quest to see if the legends out there are true and if Ancient Gods out there do exist. He spends two months wandering in the desert until he finally reaches his destination of “Pyramid Valley”.

The intro ends and this is where the game starts to begin. Much like many other RPG video games out there, you start off needing to create your own character. The game’s customization options are fairly limited, although this is understandable because this isn’t the biggest game out there. You can choose to be a human, high elf, dwarf or dark elf. You cannot alter the appearance for your character, and you can only play as a male. One interesting thing you can do is actually choose the difficulty for the game. There’s normal, hard and even an insane mode. Once you made up your mind, your quest finally begins.

The first thing you will do is go through the tutorial. Questopia’s controls are pretty straightforward and easy to follow. You control your character using either the directional buttons and/or the WASD keys. The other basic control is the attack button where you can click on the mouse, or use the space bar. Using the space bar initiates/deactivates auto-attack so you can choose for you character to attack without you controlling anything if you choose to go that route.

These are the basic fundamentals you need to know in order to control your character in Questopia. The game’s camera is from an isometric viewpoint so you’ll most likely be controlling your character travelling diagonally. Since this is a dungeon crawler video game, the environments are narrow and the maps are like a maze. You’ll have to explore every inch of the area in order to “see the exit”. There is a map located at the bottom of the screen, although it doesn’t reveal itself until you’ve actually walked into the darkened areas of any location.

During your quest, you will stumble upon several items on the floor that you can pick up and use. Several of these items might include health potions, armor or even a bigger sword for your character to wield. It’s important for you to carry any and equip any item you see on the floor as they could prove to be very useful on your quest down the dark dungeons that are in this game.

Once you have the controls and the gameplay mechanics tied down, the game itself becomes a challenge of survival. I’m surprised a small game like Questopia is actually pretty difficult to play because the enemies are very tough. Not only are the enemies pretty hard to kill on their own, but they increase in number and follow you wherever you go in the game.

The first types of enemies I encountered in the game were some mummies. These mummies walk slowly, but they can fire some green projectiles. These green projectiles are fast and can damage you a lot if there are multiple mummies coming at you all at the same time. Not to mention there are flies that buzz around you and shoot their own projectiles and green goblins that hack you with their own swords.

The annoying part about Questopia is its difficulty because a game like this shouldn’t be this hard and frustrating on its “normal” setting. You aren’t really allowed to even avoid combat in this game because your character walks too slowly for you to escape, and the enemies only increase in number if you don’t attack them. My strategy was to just kill two or three enemies at one time before advancing to the next area because fighting more than three enemies in this game always results in an instant death.

Production wise, Questopia looks cute as the character models look small with their little faces and limbs. Even the enemies don’t look that menacing. Having said that, the 2D graphics are pretty basic and the dungeons aren’t all that beautiful to look at. It’s still good to know that the audio is pretty good with a moody soundtrack and excellent sound effects to go along with it. The sounds of your sword slicing through the insects in this game are satisfying to hear.

Questopia is a fun yet very challenging RPG video game that old-school gamers should enjoy. It’s a traditional style of RPG game that rewards patience and skill more than anything else. If you’re the type of gamer that just wants to hack away all of the time, you’ll struggle to play this game because the enemies are brutally hard to kill. If you’re looking for a game that is difficult, Questopia will feed your hunger.
