Outernauts Outernauts Review
Insomniac Games has become one of the most respected game developers in the video game industry thanks to the Spyro the Dragon series the developer made during the classic PSOne era. It followed this with the popular Ratchet & Clank series and then made a trilogy of Resistance games for the PS3. Outernauts is the developer’s first foray into the free to play market and is a fun RPG game it made in conjunction with EA. If you love catching pets and making them battle like in the Pokemon games, you will find Outernauts an enjoyable game to play.
Playing the game itself is easy because you can sign up and play it via Facebook. It’s a simple process and you can play the game via your browser. When you first play the game, you are treated with a Ratchet & Clank-like cutscene with comic book style illustrations and even similar kind of music too. The premise of the game is that you explore alien planets to capture creatures and then make them engage in battle.
There is no character customization screen that you in this game as all you do is just choose whether you are a male or female. The characters are already pre-made for you so you cannot alter the appearance of your main character in anyway like in other free to play video games. Once you have done that, you are now ready to explore the galaxy in search for weird and wonderful creatures to capture.
There are five “beasts” you can choose from at the start. You can choose the following beasts: Chamopee, Rokling, Chimzee, Patchoo and a Pumaflar. Much like the animals in Pokemon do, these beasts start off small but have the potential to evolve and become bigger and more powerful. You can rename your first beast or you can be lazy and leave it as its default name if you wish.
When you have got all of the formalities finally out of the way, you can finally explore the level in hopes to capture and battle any creatures you may encounter. Not long before you start playing the game, you will be forced into your first battle. The game plays like a typical RPG video game as you will see creatures roaming the level and you can choose to approach them to battle, or ignore them if you wish. There are times they will be blocking your path so there is no choice but to battle them anyway.
The combat system in Outenauts is nothing special as it’s the typical turn-based system that is featured in most other RPG video games. Each combatant will takes turns trying to hit each other. You will have a set of commands at the bottom of your screen so you can attack your opponent. At first, I only had a simple “bite” attack and a “zap” attack. The zap attack can in handy for some creatures because their weakness was lightning. If you have played a Pokemon game before, you will already be familiar with this kind of strategy.
A unique feature for this game though is that you do have the option of trying to capture any creatures you engage in battle instead of just knocking them out. In order for you to achieve this successfully, you will need to collect items called orbs. There are two types of orbs you can get in the game. One is called the “Super Gravity Orb” and can only be purchased with Star Gems. This is the best chance for you to catch creatures because it has a 100% success rate. The other is just called a “Gravity Orb” and you will need to damage creatures’ health points to increase your chances of successfully capturing them in this fashion.
When you capture one or more creatures in the game, you will then have to face more than just one enemy on screen now. Sometimes it can be a simple two-on-two match up or even a two-on-three battle as well. You will have to make sure your creatures are healthy at all times by giving them items and also levelling them up constantly so they have new abilities to master as well. You will find it very hard in beating the boss battles in this game if you don’t take care of your creatures properly because they will be too weak.
Too bad this game does not feature any “live” battles with your facebook friends as that would have been very enjoyable. The only social/multiplayer aspects this game provides is that you can only lend resources to your friends or battle them “asynchronously”. Another annoying aspect about the game is that everything takes energy and every action you will do will deplete your energy bar even faster. If you play the game long enough in one sitting your energy bar will empty. You will then have to either wait for a friend to give you energy or wait for an hour for it to replenish. To ensure your energy bar doesn’t get too low, it replenishes each and every time you level up so it’s best to beat as many creatures as you can.
As expected from a game developed by Insomniac Games, the production value is high as the 2D graphics are animated excellently. Every creature as their own unique animations for their attacks and the character design is very unique too. Insomniac Games have always been creative with their designs and Outernauts in no exception too. The music is pretty similar to the Ratchet & Clank series. Insomniac Games must have hired the same composer as the style of music is pretty much the same here in Outernauts.
Outernauts is a very fun video game that offers hours of fun and countless different planets and environments for you to explore. Not to mention that the game is highly accessible as it’s free to play and all you need to do is play via your own Facebook account. Some may dislike the game for its obvious similarities to Nintendo’s Pokemon series, but if you can get over this, you will find that Outernauts is still a highly enjoyable game to play. It may not be original, but that does not mean that it’s a bad game to play.
