It only costs $USD0.99 to purchase, but its still not as cool as playing the game for free on a browser. Nevertheless, if games like Final Fantasy Tactics appeal to you, than Hired Heroes is a type of game that might tickle your fancy. The game starts off with a comic-book style cutscene introducing you to the story. Hired Heroes is set in a peaceful land called Winterfront. Winterfronts peaceful atmosphere is ruined once an evil dragon from the past awakens and turns many other creatures to the dark side. This is where you come in as you will have to control a band of brave heroes that will have to get rid of the evil dragon and restore Winterfront to its former glory. At the very beginning of the game, you only have 20 points to spend to hire your first hero. 20 points is only enough for you to spend on one hero and that is a knight with a sword. Dont worry though because the first battle you will engage in is simple enough for one person. Once you have hired the first hero, you are then able to pick relics that will aid you in battle. This includes a pendant that increase your attack power or a vial that increases your health points over time. Select both of them and then you will engage in your first ever battle. Moving around and attacking in this game is done in turns. Its much like as if you are playing on a board game where you can only move in a specific area and/or location. Also, combat is turn-based because you can only execute a certain number of actions before its an enemys turn to attack. In Hired Heroes, you can only move twice in one turn and attack only once. Movement is only restricted to the green highlighted squares that appear around your character, while you can only attack an enemy if the blue highlighted square appears underneath them. Much like other tactical-based video games, the key to winning in this game is positioning your characters around each level carefully. You dont want to see yourself getting stuck in a corner with all of the enemies surrounding you and attacking you. If you get in a position like this, the enemies will eventually kill you off and youll need to start the level all over again. This is where other characters with other special abilities can help you out in a big way. Whereas the first character you control is a warrior with a sword, the second character youll be able to recruit is armed with a bow and arrow. She can attack enemies from afar so its good to keep her at a distance while your warrior is upfront attacking enemies up close and personal. From personal experience, Hired Heroes isnt just an easy game you can just pick and up play. By the time I got to the third level, it took me quite a while to beat all of the enemies. I might have found this game hard because tactical-based games like this have never been a strong speciality of mine. If you have experience playing games from this genre, you are likely to have an easier time playing this game than me. When you complete each and every level, youll earn points to recruit more heroes to your party and youll also earn some gold that you can spend on as well. Gold can be spent on the shop menu that you can see on the level selection screen. There is a plethora of useful items you can purchase from the shop that include a large selection of strong armor and powerful weapons. Make sure to visit the shop often as enemies only get harder the more you progress further into the game. There are 15 levels in total which is more than enough to satisfy most casual gamers. Still, I feel this game could have benefitted featuring a multiplayer co-op mode. This way, people that are struggling to play the game can team up with other gamers that have stronger characters. This is a feature that is included in other free to play video games and its sad to see you cannot do this here in Hired Heroes. The fun thing about the game is that the number of heroes you will be able to recruit increases after each level you complete. As you near the completion of the game, you are then able to control up to 12 heroes in the battlefield at one time. You are going to need the skills of all of the 12 heroes because the enemies also grow in number and get tougher too! Graphically, the little cute looking character models and overall presentation of the game are similar to other tactical-based video games. If youve played Final Fantasy Tactics or other like-minded video games before, dont expect Hired Heroes to look any different from them. Overall, I thought the 2D graphics looked great as theyre colorful and I did not experience any lag nor did it take a long time for the game to load up either. All in all, Hired Heroes is a very fun tactical RPG video game that fans of this particular genre will love to play. There are a generous 15 levels in total for you to complete and a ton of playable characters you can be as well. Too bad there is no multiplayer offering in Hired Heroes, although the difficulty of the single player campaign will be sufficient enough to occupy most gamers for a while.
