Lucky Tower 2
Lucky Tower 2 Lucky Tower 2 is the very funny and humorous follow-up title to the original Lucky Tower video game. Its a 2D side scrolling RPG video game where you assume the role of a blonde knight called Von Wanst. If you are used to playing Japanese style RPG games where the main character is just an adolescent teenage boy, well Von Wanst is certainly not like them by any margin.
The game starts off by teaching you all of the basic controls that you will have to master in Wansts journey. Since this is a 2D RPG video game, the controls are fairly simple as the level design is flat and most of the time you are travelling from left to right or vice versa. You can press the up button if you want him to enter doors that will load up a new area for him to walk around. He can even go up and talk most people he sees as well.
Von Wansts first task is for him to wake up and put on his knight armor. You can do this by simply going up to the chest in front of him and press the up key to open it. You can even bypass the chest altogether and play the entire game by having him stay naked instead. Although this may be very funny to do, you would have to buy your own sword and armor for him at the market if you dont want to die in this game so easily.
Most free to play video games like this lack any type of voice-overs whatsoever. This is mainly due to time or budget constraints that dont allow the game developer to hire any decent voice actors to record any dialogue. Thankfully, most of the characters you will meet in this game will talk to Von Wanst and will have something useful to say to him. I must say that it sounds like the same person voices most (if not all) of the characters in the game. He does a good job of trying to vary his vocal range, although you can tell that hes not a professional voice actor by any stretch.
Once Von Wanst meets up with the King, the first task he is given is to find a person named Anton Kaufmann and return him back to the castle safely. One of the great things I loved about Lucky Tower 2 is that Von Wanst isnt the brightest person in the world and hes prone to making a lot of mistakes from time-to-time. He even has to write down quests on his wrist to remind himself on whats hes doing next. You can press the Q button to look at his wrist to see what other quests he has to do plus look at some other drawings hes made too.
After Von Wanst exits the castle, he will then have to make his way through the village. The town is quite a distance away to walk and this is where you will first have a taste of Lucky Tower 2s combat system. Its not very complicated to engage in combat in the game as Wanst is already armed with a sword and shield. All you have to press is the S key repeatedly and he will start hacking away at his enemies with ease. You can press the down key to block and you can also press the A button to jump as well. I found the combat to be very easy as the enemies in this game arent hard to defeat and can be dealt with your sword attacks pretty easily. One thing I noticed about the combat is that Wanst will say something funny to his enemies such as eat steel or slashy slashy just to name a few. Hes one of the only video game characters that I know that talk trash during combat.
Once Wanst defeats an enemy, they will often drop gold. Gold can be used to buy several items from markets that you will visit in villages and/or towns. Once Wanst reaches the village, there is a ton of people that he can talk to that will result in many interesting and humorous conversations with them.
What Lucky Tower 2 includes is an actual living and breathing community with people that actually talk to and interact with the main character. Ive played full retail games such as Final Fantasy XIII and Assassins Creed III, but the non-playable characters in those games are lifeless and boring. You cannot really talk to them in any way or interact with them in any fashion either. This isnt the case with Wanst as he is always able to strike an interesting conversation with someone.
One of my many favourite moments in the game so far was when Wanst encountered a homeless person on the street asking for him to give some spare bling. There are three options to choose from and they are to ignore him, give him bling or steal the homeless persons money from his pouch. I chose to steal his money and walk off. This isnt something I would so in real-life, but it was a funny thing to do in this game. There are many other humorous moments you can do like this as well which keeps this game entertaining and unpredictable. Making Wanst act like an arrogant prick in this game is one of Lucky Tower 2s many highlights.
Another thing this game includes is mini-games too. Once Wanst finds Anton Kaufmann at a bar, Kaufmann asks he will only return to the Kings castle only if he helps him cheat in a game of poker. What results is Wanst looking over the shoulder of Kaufmanns opponent and giving him visual cues to tell him which cards he has. I remember laughing out loud during this whole segment as its nothing Ive ever seen in a video game before.
As you progress further into the game, Wanst can even get to ride on a horse. He can also purchase other types of weapons too if he had the money such as a sledgehammer, maces, clubs and others. You will also get to visit other dungeons where you will have to face off against other goblins and other nasty creatures too.
As much fun as I had playing this game, its on the short side. You could finish the game in around 1 – 2 hours so its not a type of game that will keep you occupied for more than one day. Having said that, there are alternate endings and scenarios you can explore in the game that allows for some replay value.
Another thing about the game is that it lags sometimes. The overall gameplay is pretty smooth and Ive yet to experience any severe lag, although some of the dialogue scenes are sometimes slow to register. This isnt something that is too annoying, but its something to look out for while playing this game.
Overall, Lucky Tower 2 is an amazing free to play 2D RPG game that has witty dialogue and comedy that will appeal to most peoples taste. Von Wanst has to be one of the most entertaining main characters I have encountered in a long time. The graphics and combat in this game may seem simplistic, but its the humour that makes Lucky Tower 2 really shine. It may be on the short side, but this game is still one of the best ones Ive played all year long.
