District 187
If youre looking for a FPS to spend the night on thats easy to master and requires little brain power, then District 187 is the one for you. Classified as an MMOFPS, and although its not a bad game, it unfortunately brings nothing new to the genre. Currently in open beta, District 187 sees police SWAT teams go against gangs in violent FPS pvp warfare on the streets. It gives you the choice of the usual game modes that you would expect from the game, such as Deathmatch, including knife only Deathmatch, bomb mode and a capture game type in which one team attempts to capture an object whilst the other team defends it. The maps, although not particularly large are decent and there are different ways to launch an attack or set up a good defensive position. It is because the maps are not particularly big that you can often find yourself pinned down and unable to move because of the enemy sitting at your spawning area, even the five second invulnerability that you get receive upon respawn does nothing to help. The graphics are decent and there are a lot of positives to look forward to for when the game comes out. The guns look nice and you can even purchase modifications to your weapon, for instance you can purchase a silencer or a red dot sight, and even purchase yourself a decal for your weapon making it a little more personal and cool to look at. The good news, in the beta at least, is that the modifications are reasonably cheap and you can purchase a few right from the beginning. The mechanics are getting there but not quite. The guns seem to have a lack of recoil at the moment, as unloading an entire clip from my automatic rifle seemed to do nothing to my aim. The controls did at times feel a little unresponsive, naking weapon changing seem an eternity. There is, for the hardcore player a clan option. There are clans in the game already that have plenty of members and these are readily available and easy to join. Often you will find yourself being invited to clans you had no idea existed. There is coming soon, the chance to fight for control for territory which will no doubt make being part of a clan essential for any player wanting to be in the heart of the action. District 187 is in open beta and despite the minor negatives looks to be on the right track. The lack of uniqueness shouldnt hinder it too much, as it looks better and already plays better than others already released. If you want to get the maximum enjoyment out of it then clan warfare may be just what you want.
