Riftforge Game
Riftforge Riftforge is a RTS RPG
that looks to be like nothing else on the market. If I am honest, it looks
incredibly ambitious and perhaps too ambitious. Currently in Play Test as
developers Riftforge Entertainment speed through the gears for its release, it is
clear that they are looking to change the way RPGs are done.
First thing I found when I signed up was that I was
going to need a lot of patience. I chose my troops, sort of. It begins by
asking you to pick your troops. You have the chance of Guardians, Raiders and Rangers.
Guardians being more of a heavy unit able to tan damage better, Raiders are
light infantry, with assassins that can use stealth and finally the Rangers who
are marksmen and can use incendiaries.
I went for Rangers and hit the tutorial button.
Unfortunately, despite it telling me that the tutorial is against the AI and a
chance for me to learn the controls, I never got the chance to play it as it
suddenly went into some sort of opposition finder. I do not know if it was a
loading screen or if it was actually looking for a human player for me to test
myself against but the screen never changed and I ended up hitting refresh and skipping
the tutorial.
Starting off with my basic Ranger troops I
realised there was not much I could do. There are tabs at the top of the screen
which re self explanatory. Arena takes you to either the tutorial, if it
decides to work, or you can choose to try some pvp, again if it works and again
for me it did not find a game in more than twenty minutes of waiting. It may be
because it is in testing phase but if the option is advertised they really
should try and allow you to play it.
Finding very little else I then sent my troops on
patrol. The good news is that the patrol button actually did something and my
troops did in fact go on patrol. The bad news is that I was notified that my
troops will reach their patrol in twenty-two hours. Yes, that is twenty-two
real-time hours.
There is a shop that gives you the chance to buy
new weapons and armour and refreshing for a game, they actually give you enough
starting gold to buy things. I bought one of everything and still had gold left
over, however I never got the chance to find out how much better my items were
because of the lack of actual fighting offered to me.
Riftforge is a novel idea and is attempting to
break away from the conventional RPGs that seem to follow the tried and tested
route that we all know. The problem is that the creativity is what is going to
ruin it. It is in the Play Test stage and there is a lot of work to be done
before release, but if its going to be a successful RPG, for me, they will
certainly have to find a way to work around the lack of matchmaking when
searching for a battle. It is a good idea, but perhaps coming ten-years too late
to make an impact.
