Elsword Online Game Review

Elsword PC requirements are quite small so you do not need a very powerful computer in order to play it. Best of all, it only takes 1GB to download so you do not have to wait very long to play it either. Elsword is a free-to-play, two-dimensional side-scrolling MMORPG developed by the South Korean company KOG Studios. Elsword has servers in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany and China and is Grand chases sequel game. Elsword is a cute 2D anime-inspired MMORPG video that you can play online. It is free to play, but you will have to download 1GB of the game data first in order to play it. If you are a fan of Japanese RPG video games in general, the entire look, gameplay and overall presentation of Elsword will impress you in every possible way. Its hard not to be impressed by what this game has to offer.

For a game with impressive graphics like this, Elsword surprisingly loads pretty quickly. The load times might vary depending on how powerful your computer is, but its considerably much faster than other free to play titles I’ve played recently.

First of all, you are greeted with the character selection screen. Unlike with other MMORPG games, you dont get the chance to customize the appearance of the main character you want to play as. Instead, there are six pre made characters to select that have different specialities, strengths and weapons they use for combat.

The characters you get to be include Elsword, Aisha, Rena, Raven, Eve and Chung. Eve and Chung are new characters to the game since it launched back in 2011. Its nice to know the developer of the game is still working on creating new characters since Elsword is still played by a lot of people and the community support for this title is still strong till this very day.

From the aforementioned characters, they have varied weapons and special abilities in their arsenal. For example, the title character obviously Elsword has a huge red sword where he can slice enemies with ease. Alisha on the other hand has some type of staff where she can shoot magic projectiles. Rena is an elf girl with armed with a bow and arrow. I have not had a chance to play as the other characters yet, but its great to see the game gives you a variety of ways to engage in combat.

Unlike with most other free to play video games, Elsword actually includes voice-overs. Its great to know that the characters actually speak, but most people may not understand what they will be saying anyway. This is because all of the characters only speak in Japanese so most gamers will just end up reading the subtitles. Still, voice-overs are rare in free to play games so its a nice change to see the characters actually have voices for once.

I chose to be the elf Rena and a comic book like panel opens up where she talks with her Elder at the start of the game. The Elder explains to Rena that the power of El is draining and soon it will turn into dust. Rena will have to travel to the village of Ruben where she will have to find the Tree of El. This tree will hopefully restore the power that is lost.

After Rena goes on to the village, she sees a gang of bandits that are out to some mischief. This is where you are introduced to the games combat system which is different to most MMORPG video games. This is because it plays more like a 2D side scroller and theres a heavy emphasis on combos and fast paced action. The game is not a title that has a boring point and click system that is often used in the MMORPG genre.

You will control your character using the directions on the keyboard. Since this is a 2D video game, most of the time you will be just travelling to the right of the screen. There are times you will have to press up where your character can jump. The cool thing about the jump button is that your character can perform aerial combat moves too. The standard attack buttons that most players will press are the Z and X buttons.

The Z button is your standard attack that the character uses to attack enemies with their hands and feet. You can initiate some pretty cool looking combos in this manner, although you are vulnerable enemy attacks since you will have to be close to them. This is where the X button comes in handy because this is you can perform your long-range attack. Since I chose to be Rena, she used her bow and arrow effectively. Its helpful to attack enemies in long range since you will not receive much damage in doing so.

When it comes to stronger enemies, you can also use the characters special moves too. These are mapped on the A, S, D and C buttons. In total, each character has four skills that they can use in battle. As you progress further into the game, you do have the chance to upgrade the skills you already have, or you can unlock new ones as well. The skills are pretty helpful for the many boss battles that await you in this game.

The game is set up just like other MMORPG video games as there is a village and lots of dungeon maps you have to travel to as well. The village acts as your safe haven as this is where you can shop for items and weapons, plus is also where you can meet up with new players and accept quests from non playable characters too.

The best thing about Elsword is that it is not designed to be a game that you will play on your own. Each dungeon that you enter in, you can either create or join a party with up to three other players. If you are the party master, you can even set the difficulty setting for the dungeon as well. Dungeons are pretty much where most of the action takes place as you will wipe out every enemy that you see on the screen and are greeted with a boss at the end of each of them.

Although Elsword is designed to be a co-op game, you do have the option of participating in some very fun PvP battles with other players too. You can take part in an all out free-for-all or in a team deathmatch. The winner is the person that gets the most kills. Its a nice alternative to the single player mode, although real life players are much harder to kill than enemy A.I.

Presentation wise, Elsword Online looks and sounds lovely. The bright 2D cel-shaded graphics resemble that of the recent Naruto video games out for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Personally, I feel the that the best part of the entire game is the audio. I already touched upon the game's voice-overs, but I have to say the music in this game is impressive too. New pieces of music greet you whenever you enter a new area in the game. The Korean pop style of music that plays in the background of the main menu is catchy and great to listen to as well. Overall, Elsword has one of the best pieces of music I've heard in a free to play video game.

As much praise as I’m giving the game now, there are a few things that annoyed me. First of all, I was in a party with a friend I met in the game and we were going through most of the dungeons with ease. Our fun suddenly stopped when he was ready to enter a new dungeon. This wouldn't have been a problem but I had to be at a certain level to enter that dungeon. This meant I had to level up first which was a time consuming thing to do. I guess this makes sense, but it was no fun playing the game on my own leveling up.

Also, some people might say that this game gets repetitive too. This is because the dungeons play out all the same. Its a 2D side scrolling game and all that you are doing is bashing a lot of enemies while travelling to the right of the screen. This can be a fun experience, but it can get repetitive if you’re playing the game for several hours. Not to mention that EVERY enemy has to be defeated in order to advance.

Apart from some minor problems, Elsword is a highly enjoyable MMORPG video game. If you are into Japanese style of video games, everything about Elsword will appeal to you. The anime style character models, the bright 2D graphics, the catchy music and fast paced combat system are all things that make this game great. Its one of those free to play titles that have very high production values and can be enjoyed for months on end . Overall, Elsword is a great Elsword game that you shouldn’t miss out on playing.
